Rohingya crisis: Bangladesh to restrict movement of migrants Posted: 16 Sep 2017 08:19 PM PDT Bangladesh is limiting the movement of more than 400,000 Rohingya migrants who have fled from neighbouring Myanmar. They must stay in fixed places allocated to them by the government and not travel elsewhere, police say. Bangladesh also announced plans to build shelters for up to 400,000 people near the city of Cox’s Bazar. The mainly Muslim Rohingyas have been fleeing a Myanmar government offensive since last month, which the UN says could amount to ethnic cleansing. Rights groups have accused the military of burning Rohingya villages. But the army says it is responding to attacks by militants and denies it is targeting civilians. Meanwhile, a fresh diplomatic row between Bangladesh and Myanmar has broken out over alleged violations of Bangladeshi airspace in the past week. In a statement, Bangladeshi police said Rohingyas would not be allowed to travel anywhere outside of their allocated homes, not even to live with family or friends. Transport operators and drivers have also been urged not to carry refugees, with landlords told not to rent out any property to them. Analysts say the government wants to stop the Rohingya from disappearing into the general population and to keep them visible, in the hope of returning them to Myanmar – or even a third country. What do we know about the new shelters? According to Bangladesh’s Daily Star newspaper, the new shelters will be on a site covering about 8 sq km (3 sq miles) of land, close to established camps which have been overwhelmed by arrivals from Myanmar. A total of 8,500 temporary toilets will be built and 14 “makeshift warehouses” will be set up near the shelters, the paper says. The new shelters are meant to be built within 10 days. Posted: 16 Sep 2017 11:55 AM PDT The JOURNALISTS FEDERATION OF INDIA (JFI) joins its affiliate Journalist Association of India (JAI) in condemning the brutal killing of noted journalist Gauri Lankesh in Bengaluru, India on September 5. The IFJ demands urgent action from the government of India to tackle the worsening situation for FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION in Karntaka state and calls on Law and Order maintain authorities to use every means to arrest the culprits. Gauri Lankesh, 55, a famous journalist and outspoken critic of Hindu nationalists, was shot dead outside her home in Rajarajeshwarinagar in Bengaluru. Three unidentified gunmen on a motorbike fired at least four shots at her as she entered of her home. Gauri Lankesh died on the spot after receiving gunshots to the head and chest. The shoter fled the scene and still abscond. Local officials have said they suspected she had been under surveillance by the gunmen. Her death has been condemned, by the Secy. General of Journalists Federation of India calling it an “assassination on democracy”. Lankesh was editor and publisher of a Kannada- weekly newspaper Gauri Lankesh Patrike and wrote widely in the English media. In November 2016, Lankesh was convicted in two defamation cases by a magisterial court for a 2008.and appealing the conviction, claiming it was an attempt to silence her. India’s Karnataka state has experienced growing intolerance against critical voices. In June 2017, the state assembly jailed two editors and fined them for publishing reports criticising the members of legislative assembly. Several other outspoken secularists and independent rationalists have also been murdered in recent years in similar circumstances. Gauri Lankesh is the second journalist to be killed in India this year, and the seventh in 18 months. H K Sethi of Journalist Association of India said: “ Journalist Association of India strongly condemns the brutal murder of noted journalist Gaouri Lankesh and demands immediate arrest of the accuseds / culprits. We expresses shock and anger at the dastardly killing of Gauri Lankesh, editor of Lankesh Patrika. Gauri Lankesh has been a trenchant and courageous critic of hindutva and casteist politics. Since last November, she has been fighting her conviction in a criminal defamation case against BJP MP in Dharwad Prahallad Joshi and was out on bail. Journalists will not be cowed down by such cowardly acts. The JAI demands that the Karnataka government move with speed to investigate the killing and book the assailants. As it is, there has been no progress in the investigation into the death of the renowned writer Kalburgi. The failure to book the culprits will further embolden obscurantist forces in their nefarious attempts to intimidate and silence independent voices of dissent and reason.” Further said Intolerance and often criminal intimidation that surrounds us and tries to prevent us everywhere. We want to declare to ourselves and to everyone that is watching with and without malice – we will not be prevented, silenced, outdone or shut down.” “The brutal murder of Gauri Lankesh is a deplorable act to silence an outspoken, fearless and critical voice. The targeting and hounding of Lankesh for her critical journalism already played out in the courts before reaching this horrific and brutal conclusion. This action must be condemned at the highest levels and strong action taken by authorities in Karnataka state as it clearly follows a deadly pattern.
